The Chestnut – Delicious Traditions

When one thinks of Feldthurns, one immediately thinks of chestnuts – "Keschte", as we say in South Tyrolean dialect.

The "Keschtnweg" (Chestnut Trail), the Castaneum community center, and the many delicious chestnut-inspired dishes have become symbols of Feldthurns – the village where the sun feels at home.

And right here, for more than 500 years, stands the Oberwirt. For three generations – nearly 60 years now – it has been lovingly run by the Brunner-Gamper family. Located directly next to Velthurns Castle, just cross the road and step straight into the world of chestnuts. If you’d like it a touch more poetic or slightly more concise, I’d be happy to refine it further.

The Idea

Exactly – because Margit and Bartl Brunner-Gamper, the owners of Hotel Oberwirt, have pulled something new out of the hat.

"During the lockdown, we didn’t want to just sit around twiddling our thumbs. That’s not much fun in the long run," says Margit, the heart and soul of the Oberwirt.

"And since my husband Bartl is a trained bricklayer – and by no means unskilled – we fully dedicated ourselves to renovating and reorganizing our bar, restaurant, and pizzeria. Thanks to the precise execution of all the construction and furnishings by our skilled local craftsmen, we were able to complete everything on schedule. A big thank-you to all of you – you’re people you can truly rely on!"

The Concept

Chestnuts have long played an important role at Hotel Oberwirt – from “Keschtnholz” (chestnut wood) used in the furnishings, to the leaf shapes as decorative elements, and a series of images depicting chestnuts from different angles and perspectives. Not least, the choice of name for the new bar, pizzeria, and restaurant – Keschte – was inspired by the many chestnut trees on the family’s farm near Lake Garda. The Keschte concept is not just about appearances. The chestnut, as a natural product, plays a central role in the culinary offerings at the kitchen, bar, and pizza oven, showcasing its versatility in countless applications.
